AI visibility is the share of relevant AI answers that name your brand. When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity who to hire in your category and market, you are either in the one to three names that come back, or you do not exist for that buyer. Most brands have never measured this. Most brands are at zero.
If AI does not name you, you do not exist for that buyer.
The scale, in one paragraph
AI assistants now generate roughly 45 billion sessions worldwide, equal to about 56 percent of global search engine volume, and about 34 percent of US search activity happens on AI tools (Graphite, 2026). AI referral traffic to websites is still small, around 1 percent of visits, but it grew over 500 percent year over year, and it arrives pre-convinced because the comparison happened inside the chat.
Why it is worth measuring now
The last bar is the opportunity: buyer behavior has moved, and 84 percent of even the largest companies are not measuring it yet. In most categories the answer slots are still unclaimed.
How to measure it
- 1. Write down the five to ten questions your buyers actually ask when shortlisting. Questions, not keywords: "who is the best M&A advisor for lower-middle-market deals in the UK," not "M&A advisor UK."
- 2. Ask them fresh on each engine that matters: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews.
- 3. Record three things per answer: are you named (a mention), are you linked (a citation), and who is named instead of you.
- 4. Score it: named answers divided by total answers is your visibility share. Track mentions and citations separately, because they move for different reasons.
- 5. Repeat monthly. The trend is the metric; a single snapshot is a mood.
How to move it
In order of impact: one consistent entity sentence used everywhere your brand appears. Pages shaped as direct answers to the questions you measured. Complete, consistent listings, which together with your own site account for about 86 percent of AI citations. Original data and named frameworks engines must cite rather than paraphrase. And an active LinkedIn presence, which is now the most-cited domain for professional queries. On retrieval-backed engines, BlazeGEO has measured first citations within 24 to 72 hours of publishing well-structured pages.
