Ask the same question to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews and you get three answers built from three different reading lists. Publish without knowing those lists and your AI visibility is luck. The engines matter unequally, too: ChatGPT alone drives about 78 percent of all AI chatbot referral traffic (Statcounter, 2026), Google AI Mode passed a billion monthly users, and Perplexity's query volume nearly doubled in nine months to over a billion queries a month.
Each engine has a favorite source
- ChatGPT leans on Wikipedia and reference sources for factual grounding, which rewards entity clarity and encyclopedic descriptions of what you are.
- Perplexity leans on Reddit and community discussion, which rewards genuine expert participation in the threads your buyers read.
- Google AI Overviews blends its own index with community sources, which rewards conventional search authority plus answer-shaped structure. Google's own properties, from Business Profiles to YouTube, feed its source pool directly.
AI citations are not Google rankings
Three quarters of what AI cites never ranked on page one of Google.
AI visibility is a separate game with separate rules, and it pays differently too: brands cited in AI Overviews earn roughly 120 percent more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands (Seer Interactive, 2026).
What stays constant across engines
Around 86 percent of AI citations come from sources brands already control: roughly 44 percent from brand websites and 42 percent from listings and profiles. The engine-specific platforms fight over the remaining slice. So the order of operations is the same everywhere: your own site first, your listings second, engine-specific platforms third.
How to use this
- 1. Find out which engine your buyers actually use before choosing platforms. A wealth manager's clients and a developer tool's users do not ask in the same place.
- 2. Make your site citable before anything else: direct answers, clean structure, original data, consistent entity descriptions.
- 3. Complete every listing that describes you, with the same one-sentence description everywhere.
- 4. Then invest in the platform your target engine weights: reference-style content for ChatGPT, genuine community participation for Perplexity and Google.
- 5. Re-test quarterly. Engine weightings shift with every model and retrieval update; treat every number here as a snapshot.
